Counselor Program
for students ages 16+ eager to enhance their leadership skills in an educational or similar setting
Expectations
Counselors will be working closely with teachers and students within the workshops. This program is designed for 16 year olds and up to work with experienced teachers assisting them in the classroom, activities, and field trips for their assigned workshop. Counselors will be required to provide in-class support which may require dedicated time spent with specific students to facilitate the projects and activities. A counselor's duty is to motivate and encourage the students in order to provide a fun and memorable experience for them, the teacher, and oneself.
Not quite 16 yet?
We do offer the opportunity for 15 year olds to join our counselor program with the following criteria.
The student has:
- previously enrolled as a CIT for a total of 8 weeks at TDS Summer Programs and/or another approved program (proof of completion of a CIT program outside of TDS is required).
- worked as a CIT for 2 weeks prior to applying as a counselor for the same summer. We want to make sure the candidate is ready to work independently and require current mentor teachers to approve the candidate's new position as a counselor.
- been awarded high recommendations by their mentor teachers.
Expected Outcomes
This program is a great opportunity for future educators or leaders, or those interested in working with youth to gain the necessary skills to become a responsible and reliable member of the community with a strong work ethic. Benefits include exercising teamwork, exploring a new career path, and gaining confidence as a leader all while being compensated for hard work. Counselors can add this experience to their resume in addition to receiving a letter of recommendation, if needed.
The student will leave with:
- Increased self-esteem and personal growth derived from successfully meeting new interpersonal and work-related challenges
- Acquired new skills and knowledge.
- Increased exposure to various work roles in an educational setting
- Increased opportunities for students to explore areas of an educational career interest
- Development of positive relationships between the internship program, students, and the TDS community.
Hours
Counselors are encouraged to work a minimum of two 30 hour work weeks in order to allow for improvement on feedback provided by the director and mentor instructor. Our camp hours are 9am to 3pm which totals 30 hours. Counselors are also welcome to apply to work in extended day (before and aftercare program) from 8am to 5pm. All counselors are allotted a 30 minute lunch break during the camp day and an additional 15-30 minutes if working the full 40 hour work week.
